Amberley
Evidence from flint tools shows the area around Amberley has been inhabited for over 4000 years. The river has always been important; fragments of oak canoes dating back to 1000BC have been excavated.
Parts of the church at Amberley are Norman, but there was an earlier Saxon structure. The castle is a 12th century manor house that was later fortified; it is now a spectacular hotel. Amberley Museum is a hidden gem in an old chalk quarry, containing an eclectic collection ranging from buses to bowyers.
