Billingshurst
Evidence indicates Billingshurst village has been continually occupied since Saxon times. It lies on the route of the Roman road of Stane Street that ran from London to Chichester. At the heart of the village there are some fine half timbered houses centred on the church of St Mary’s and the old coaching inn, the Six Bells. The village's name probably came from Anglo-Saxon Billinges hyrst = "Billa's son's wooded hill."
Since the 1950s there has been a considerable expansion of the original village and it now has many of the amenities associated with a small town.
